Where is the key for the TSA lock? If the number lock looks similar to any lock in the picture below, with a red diamond logo, it is a TSA (Travel Sentry® Approved) lock. There is NO key to the lock, as the master key is held ONLY by the immigration custom officers, for them to check the luggage contents without cutting off or breaking open the number lock (Source: Wikipedia ). Based on our experience, the customs officer will leave a note in the luggage whenever they open any passenger's luggage for inspection. It is a safety regulation imposed by United States and Canada for all inbound/outbound/transit passengers to have their luggage locked either by TSA lock or TSA padlock. So, for the sake of keeping your luggage lock intact, get a luggage from us equipped with TSA lock (or you may use your own TSA padlock too). Different types of TSA locks 2. Which countries require TSA locks? For now, only visitors to U.S. and Canada need to adhere to this safety regulation. The default passcode to unlock is '0-0-0'. a) With the number combination in the unlocked position, locate a small round button at the side of the lock. Using the sharp tip of a pen, push the round button in (it should remain depressed). b) Next, turn the number dials to your desired combination. c) Then push the unlock latch all the way in and the small round button will pop out with a 'click' sound. Hence, it's not surprising that a question we get really often from friends and customers looking to purchase a new luggage is "What is the size of luggage I should get?" or "What is the most appropriate luggage size for my trip?". To be honest, this is a really difficult question to answer because it's dependent on so many factors, from the travel destination to an individual's travel style. More often than not, the best answer is "It depends!". Nevertheless, let's talk about 3 considerations to help you decide amongst the 3 most common luggage sizes: 20" (carry on / cabin size), 24" (check-in size) and 28" (check-in size). These dimensions in inches generally refers to the height of the luggage. 1. Travel destination and duration Source: mrkate.com The type and amount of clothes you bring is mostly dependent on the number of days of you are travelling for, and the season of the destination country. You could probably get by with a 20" cabin luggage on a short weekend getaway to a summery beach, but an extended 2-week trip to Finland over Christmas would require something way bigger - even though we've heard of amazing business people who live out their globetrotting lives on 18" suitcases everywhere (here are some tips !). For regular folks like us, a 28" luggage will comfortably fit a week's worth of clothing and 3-4 sweaters and scarves, and a pair of boots for one person on a Winter holiday. A 24" luggage could work as well, if you don't intend to do much shopping and don't mind doing laundry along the way! For travellers on budget airlines for a long weekend vacation , 20 inch carry-on luggage is perfect, just keep in mind the 7 kg carry-on limit! For spring/summer holidays or to tropical regions like Southeast Asia, 24 inch is a good size for a week of travel. For longer holidays (e.g. 2 weeks, or young family), especially to the Americas or Europe, we recommend 28 inch (it would be a waste not to visit the Premium Outlets!). 2. Airlines baggage allowance and regulations Source: www.holidayextras.co.uk If you are planning to bring your luggage onboard, a 20" luggage is probably the maximum allowable on most airlines. Anything bigger will have to be checked in. Do note that there are weight limits as well. These regulations vary by airline and flight routes, and are subject to changes. Here, we find that stacking is the key! Luggage that comes in a set is designed to be nestled together just like Russian dolls (i.e. 20" fitting into 24" fitting into 28"), so the overall space taken is essentially the size of the biggest piece. You could do that with luggage of different designs too, as long as you check each dimension (LxWxH) for compatibility. You could even vacuum-pack all your bulky sweaters and squeeze them into the smallest luggage before stacking everything together. And guess what - you are all ready to plan for the next trip!

Famous for its beautiful architecture such as covered bridges, palaces, mosques and minarets, it also led to an old Persian proverb "Isfahan is half of the world". Indeed, the architecture we've witnessed in this first stop of our Iran trip had set the expectations very high. We spent a total of 2 and a half days in Isfahan. Expenses for 2 persons: S$560 (Entry visa - $165, Hotel - S$165, Meals - S$60, Transport - S$70, Entrance tickets - S$50, Shopping - S$50) Things to Do / Places to see in Isfahan The night flight from Istanbul Ataturk airport brought us to Isfahan in the wee hours of the morning, arriving at 3am. It was interesting to observe that all ladies put on their headscarfs as the the plane began its descent into Esfahan. It is mandatory (regardless of individual's religion) for ladies to put on headscarfs and dress conservatively (with tops that cover their hips) throughout their time in Iran. Even though the queue for the visa counter (S$83 per pax) was short (less than 5 persons), it took quite a long time (30-45mins) for the visa to be processed and issued. By the time we left the airport, it was already 4am in the morning. Thankfully our hotel, Hasht Behesht Apartment Hotel (S$83 per night), provided airport pickup service (US$20) even in these odd hours. The hotel is a 10-minute walk away from the famous Naqsh-e Jahan Square, a UNESCO World Heritage Site . As we walked towards the square on that morning, we were slightly choked by the smell of CO2 due to the fumes from incomplete combustion of dated cars. Due to the international trade sanctions, Iranians usually drive locally-made Saipa or Peugeot cars. Here's a typical street view: Naqsh-E Jahan Square is a huge square with 3 main buildings on each side of the Square - Sheikh Lotfollah Mosque, Ali Qapu Palace and the Naqsh-E Jahan Mosque. The souks alongside the Square and nicely manicured gardens in the centre complete the maiden Persian experience. *Tip: There are quite a number of Persian carpet merchants in the Square, who always readily offer you a cup of tea at their shop. While we were eager to befriend the locals, some of the merchants are quite pushy and might not be too happy should you not buy any carpets from them. Therefore, kindly decline their offer of tea if you realised they're from the carpet shops, unless you intend to get a carpet (from US$200 upwards, but considered 'cheap' since it's direct from the manufacturing country). To distinguish merchants from Iranians who are sincere in welcoming you as a friend, merchants usually approach you alone, and speaks fluent English. Our first meal in Iran was a shop at the corner of the Square (at the end of the side with Ali Qapu palace), and turned out to be a very good place for a local dish Chicken Tahcheen - Rice flavoured with saffron, yogurt, egg yolks, layered with chicken breast, barberries, walnuts and pistachio slices. Crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, insanely delicious! To offer a perspective of how MASSIVE the serving was. By the way, the servings (especially the rice) are generally huge in Iran, so a main course is sufficient for a travelling couple. Moreover, you need to reserve some space for a delicious Iranian dessert - Faloodeh, made of vermicelli noodles made from corn starch, sticky ice cream drenched in lime syrup. Ali Qapu Palace (150,000IRR / S$6 per pax), built in the 17th century, was used by the monarch to entertain visitors and ambassadors. The ceiling of the entrance to Ali Qapu Palace, as with most Persian architecture, was beautifully-designed with repetitive yet artistic motifs. The designs here were even carved to produce a '3D' effect. The music halls of Ali Qapu Palace were mesmerising, designed to enhance the quality of music produced in the palace during the old times. Looking at the ceilings became a habit when we were in Iran as they were all so beautiful. Built between 1603-1619, Sheikh Lotfollah Mosque (100,000IRR / $4 per pax) is one of the architectural masterpieces of Safavid Iranian architecture. It was built as a private mosque for the royals. Here's the ceiling of the massive pillar-less dome, with lemon-shaped designs that decrease in size as they go towards the apex. Below was the towering entrance to Shah Mosque (150,000IRR / S$6 per pax), the mosque on one end of the Naqsh-E Jahan Square. The hand-painted artwork on these ceilings and pillars were definitely among the finest Persian arts. Depicted on the reverse side of the Iranian 20,000 rials note, Shah Mosque is regarded as one of the masterpieces of Iranian architecture. This dome is the largest one in the city, at the height of 52m. The souks, otherwise known as marketplaces or bazaar, have retained its rustic charm and do not look as 'commercial' and well-renovated like the ones at Istanbul's Grand Bazaar. - [Yazd, Iran](https://www.luggageoutlet.sg/blogs/places-to-go/yazd-iran): The historical city of Yazd in central Iran was inscribed on UNESCO's World Heritage List on July 9, 2017. Known also as a city in the desert, it is famous for its adobe (building bricks made of earth/clay/straw) architecture, Zoroastrian fire temples as well as unique structures that facilitate living in a desert (e.g. windcatchers, Yakchal - structures to store ice in desert during summer). For us, the most amazing experience was to get 'lost' in the maze-like city centre (a little like CounterStrike's de_dust map!), and seeing how cars navigate through these super-tight spaces. We spent a total of 1.5 days (2 nights) in Yazd. Expenses for 2 persons: S$337 (Hotel - S$135 , Meals - S$76, Transport - S$63, Entrance tickets - S$57, Shopping - S$4) Things to Do / Places to see in Yazd How to get to Yazd: We took a 5-hour bus ride (220,000IRR / S$9.60 per pax) from Isfahan to Yazd, which dropped us off at the city centre. Jame Mosque of Yazd Upon alighting the bus, we walked to this easily recognisable landmark - Jame mosque, which is next to the complex 'maze' of lodges/shops that the city is also famous for. This mosque is depicted on the Iranian 200 rials note. The minarets for this mosque are the highest in Iran. Our hotel was a 'random', spontaneous one in the maze as the hotel we booked previously was overbooked. Incredible hand-painted mosaic artwork The view of the mosque in the day (below), again with very intricate mosaic tile designs set on imposing structures. Zoroastrian Fire Temple (Yazd Atash Behram) Zoroastrianism, one of the oldest religions in the world (at 3500 years old), is a religion that seems to have influenced several other religions such as Judaism, Christianity and Islam. It was the state religion of the Persian empire. In this Zoroastrian temple (100,000 IRR / S$4.40 per pax), you can learn about the history of this religion and the typical offerings used. The Faravahar, the symbol at the top of the temple, symbolizes good thoughts, good words and good deed, which are the tenets and principles of Zoroastrianism. In the temple, there is a sacred fire that is said to be burning since AD470. Tower of Silence (Dakhma) Tower of Silence (100,000 IRR / S$3.40 per pax) is essentially a grave for the Zoroastrians in the past. At the top of the hill is a circular raised structure where bodies of the dead are placed and exposed to the sun and to scavenging birds. This was the safest way to prevent the pollution of earth or fire, according to the followers. It could take as long as a year before the body is fully disintegrated and washed out to the sea. This practice was discontinued in earlier 20th century and replaced with burial or cremation. View of Yazd city from the top of the tower Here was where the Zoroastrians would leave the dead bodies to be exposed to the sun and scavenging birds, and after a year, they would be moved to the centre (known as the pit). Dowlat Abad Garden Dowlat Abad Garden (200,000 IRR / S$6.80 per pax), is one of the 9 Persian gardens collectively listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site . It also has similar elements as with other Persian Gardens - rows of trees lined on both sides of the water feature, courtyard and a complex irrigation system. This garden design has influenced overseas gardens as well, most notably Taj Mahal of India. The scenery is so beautiful and calming that couples take pre-wed shots here. Amir Chakhmagh Complex is a prominent structure in Yazd, with the symmetrical sunken alcoves and beautiful lighting in the night, albeit a slightly one-dimensional facade (beyond the facade was a block of single-storey shops). The picture below would have been easily mistaken as one set in the 80s/90s, but this was actually taken in 2015. Yazd Water Museum (150,000 IRR / S$6.50 per pax) is located just opposite of the Amir Chakhmagh Temple. While the exterior of the museum looks inconspicuous, the exhibits in the museum tell an impressive history about how the Persians survived in this desert city with the underground water system - Qanat, another UNESCO World Heritage site . These primitive underground water tunnels channel the water from highlands to the city, providing precious, reliable supply of water to human settlements and irrigation in hot and arid climates. Saheb A Zaman Zoorkhaneh (Traditional Gym) Another place well-worth visiting is the traditional gym (50,000IRR / S$2.20 per pax) that is still in use today by the Iranians. It is located just next to the Amir Chakhmagh Complex. On days where gym classes were held, the participants had to swing the meels - bowling-pin shaped wooden clubs - on the bottom left of the picture below in circles, and it was definitely not an easy feat. Underneath the gym is a water reservoir which is open to visitors, and from the exterior of the gym the windcatchers were also visible. These windcatchers would channel cool air into the gym and reservoir, and serve as their 'natural air conditioner'. Last but not the...
- [Ancient ruins of Pasargadae, Naqsh-e Rustam and Persepolis, Iran](https://www.luggageoutlet.sg/blogs/places-to-go/ancient-ruins-of-pasargadae-necropolis-and-persepolis-iran): The Persian Empire (550 - 330BC) was the largest empire by percentage of world population in history, and was said that around 480BC, 44% of the world's population lived in the Persian Empire. The full day 500 km road trip (we hired a driver-cum-guide for US$170) departing from Yazd towards Shiraz has brought us through these ancient sites of the Persian empire. Expenses for 2 persons: S$285 (Meals - S$ 20, Transport - S$230, Entrance tickets - S$35) Things to Do / Places to see in Pasargadae, Naqsh-e Rustam and Persepolis Pasargadae was the capital of the Achaemenid Empire, the first empire established as the Persian Empire by Cyrus the Great. With its historical significance in ancient history, without a doubt it was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site . Upon entering the compounds (150,000 IRR / S$6.50 per pax) of the ruins (which measure a massive 2 km x 3 km), we came across this imposing limestone tomb where once held Cyrus the Great's sarcophagus. Even though this ancient site has plenty of historical value, much of the compounds were barren (most of the ruins were probably not excavated yet), with little pieces of ruins left exposed on the ground. To fully appreciate the value of this site, we suggest further reading/research before visiting this site, as there were not many signages nor monuments to visualise the architecture then. The Audience Hall of the Pasargadae Palace below was in the early stages of restoration. Restoration was on-going for some of the monuments, such as the 'prison of Solomon' below, but perhaps due to the lack of visitors, it wasn't extensively restored yet. Next up, Naqsh-e Rustam (100,000 IRR / S$4.30 per pax) is an ancient necropolis (large cemetery with elaborate tomb monuments) housing 4 tombs of the Achaemenid kings. The entrance to each tomb is at the center of the cross, which opens to a small chamber where the sarcophagus was laid. The entrances are about 10 metres above ground, but are not accessible by the public. Beneath the entrances are rock reliefs carved with large figures of kings from the Sasanid dynasty (a later period than the Achaemenid dynasty) in combat or meeting gods. The most famous rock relief is Triumph of Shapur I, that depicts the victory of this Sasanid king over two Roman emperors. The most impressive Persian ruins has to be Persepolis (150,000 IRR / S$6.50 per pax) , the ceremonial capital of Achaemenid Empire, where kings hosted all foreign dignitaries. Considered to be one of the world's greatest archaeological sites (inscribed as a UNESCO site), the site was built over a span of almost 100 years (518BCE ~ 424BCE), through 3 generations of Achaemenid kings. The Gate of All Nations below, was where foreign dignitaries would enter the complex with their gifts and wait in the holding area. There were several palaces built during the different kings' reigns and bas-reliefs were evident on most walls and doorways, depicting either foreign dignitaries making their way to the palace or battling scenes between warriors and beasts. Foreign dignitaries had brought gifts representative of their nations to the palace as shown below, including animals and agricultural produce. Bas-reliefs of Persian Royal Guards and the famous Lion vs Bull battle scene, symbolising Nowruz (Persia's New Year) in Zoroastrianism. The Palace of Hundred Columns (below) was built during the reigns of Xerxes and Artazerxes I, where 100 stone columns used to support this hall measuring almost 70 square metres. As the day drew to a close, we took a step back and admired the sunset view in this massive site (all 125000 sqm of it). Last glance at the Persepolitan Stairway, consisting of 111 steps, each measuring 6.9 metres wide. While history isn't our favourite subject in school, this one day tour of these ancient ruins gave us a more complete picture of Iran's history. Next stop: Shiraz
- [Shiraz, Iran](https://www.luggageoutlet.sg/blogs/places-to-go/shiraz): Prior to visiting Iran, we only knew Shiraz either as a red wine, or the kebab stall along Orchard Road, Singapore. Little did we expect Shiraz to be a romantic city full of poets, literature, flowers and dazzling shrines. It was also the seat of the Zand dynasty in the 18th century, founded by Karim Khan. We arrived in Shiraz after a day trip departing from Yazd, through Pasargadae, Naqsh-e Rustam and lastly Persepolis . We spent a total of 2 full days in Shiraz. Expenses for 2 persons: S$365 (Hotel - S$108, Meals - S$85, Transport - S$36, Entrance tickets - S$43, Shopping - S$93) Things to do / Places to see in Shiraz Nasir ol Mulk , also known as the Pink Mosque (IRR100000 per pax / S$4 per pax), is a mosque most visited by tourists in the early morning hours between 730am to 930am. The early morning sunlight would pass through the stained glass and cast breathtaking colours on the carpets. To catch the natural light show in full splendour, we recommend you to visit as early as you can wake up, as we had quite an upsetting episode at the mosque when we reached at 8am, bumping into a tour group that hogged the best picture spots for almost a full hour. It was only until another tour group who lost their patience that they got this inconsiderate group to leave. As this mosque remains a holy place of worship for the locals, be reminded to not take off the headscarf, as well as not eat in the mosque. These were again, disappointing behaviour from the inconsiderate group. As the time draws nearer to 930am, the coloured lights would stretch beyond the first row of pillars and would not look as beautiful. Here's how the mosque looks from the exterior, with white sheets (on the right of the picture) diffusing the sunlight before casting the coloured light rays on the carpets. There were also many gorgeously painted arches and walls. Located just less than 5-minute walk away from Nasir-ol-Mulk, is Naranjestan Garden , otherwise known as Qavam House . This traditional and historical house belongs to a merchant known as the Qavam family. The mirror work in the front porch was unexpectedly a 'teaser' for the even more impressive mirror work in the shrines we would later see in Shiraz. The ceilings of the house was also beautifully painted with art inspired by Victorian era Europe. Vakil Mosque (IRR50000 / S$2 per pax), is a mosque that is within walking distance of the places visited earlier. It has a simpler, more plain architecture as compared to the ones in Isfahan. Perhaps due to the holiness of the place, ladies are required to cover up (provided at the entrance) their entire body, like wearing a burqa. The center portion of the prayer hall is where they have more decorated ceilings. Situated also in the historical center of the city is Vakil Bazaar , a typical Iranian marketplace visited by locals and tourists alike. As you can see below, Iranians have modern fashion sense despite the modest dressing guideline. Visit one of the spices shops if you love to cook! About 10 minutes walk away, we visited Arg-e-Karim-Khan , the citadel where the first ruler of Zand dynasty, Karim Khan lived. The interesting part of the complex is perhaps the 'leaning tower' (at 14 metres tall) below, which resembled the one in Pisa. The citadel also provides onsite tour guide, at 200,000IRR / S$8.70 for 2 persons. As the paintings were plastered over after the fall of Qajar dynasty to convert the place into a prison, there was not much to see within the compounds. We then took a cab (IRR100,000 / S$4) to Saadi Mausoleum , where one of the most famous poets in Persian history, Saadi, was honoured. His poems were quoted by UN secretary-general and former US president Barack Obama, encouraging people to nice to each other and help each other when in need. Hafez Mausoleum , a cab ride away (IRR70,000 / S$3) from Saadi Mausoleum, is where another famous Persian poet is commemorated for his contributions to Persian poetry. Many locals were present when we went, sitting down on the steps chatting or enjoying the tea served at the teahouse. Just minutes-walk away, Qur'an Gate is a structure built in the 10th century on the fringe of Shiraz city, said to bless the people who passed beneath it. On the side of the gate is a park where you could have a bird's eye view of the glittering city at night. We saw parkour practitioners utilising the walls alongside the park to demonstrate their jumping and somersaulting skills, which reminded us of the vintage video game in the 90s, Prince of Persia. Possibly the most memorable, mind-blowing, jaw-dropping place we have visited in our entire Iran trip, is the Shah Cheragh Shrine (free entry with voluntary guides!). Even though the exterior of the complex looks clean and plain, the interior artwork is the most incredible we have ever seen. Flight delay Place of incidence: Bangkok, Thailand Incident and response: Our JetStar flight back to Singapore, was delayed for 7 hours due to inclement weather from its earlier route. We were informed by Jetstar both via email and SMS. No further response needed in Bangkok for the insurance claim, except spending a few more hours relaxing in the Land of Smiles. Claim Category: Travel Delay Company: ACE My VoyageGuard Travel Insurance (now known as Chubb) Documents needed for the claim: Boarding Passes, Email/SMS from Airline Claimed amount: ~$200 2. Flight brought forward Place of incidence: Hue, Vietnam Incident and response: Our VietJetAir flight departing from Hue towards Ho Chi Minh city was brought forward by 2 hours, and we were informed only via email the night before. As we didn't have internet connection then, we missed the brought-forward flight when we got to the airport and a subsequent connecting flight back to Singapore. As a result, without an available connecting flight after we arrived in Ho Chi Minh, we had to stay overnight in Ho Chi Minh city. It was quite a nightmarish experience and we found it unbelievable that VietJetAir didn't provide SMS-notification service on flight changes for international customers. We chased the VietJetAir counter staff to provide a written explanation on the flight changes, but they were quite reluctant to do so. Persistence paid off in the end and we had a written explanation from them, which was essential for the claim. Claim Category: Travel Postponement, Misconnection Company: ACE My VoyageGuard Travel Insurance (now known as Chubb) Documents needed for the claim: Flight itineraries, Boarding passes, New flight bookings, Hotel receipt, Explanation from airline Claimed amount: ~$270 (Flight Delay + New Flight + Hotel) 3. Stolen possession Place of incidence: Perth, Western Australia Incident and response: Car was broken into while we went on sight-seeing, and our possessions were stolen when we returned to the car, having to spent the rest of the road trip without a side window. We took pictures of the damages and made a police report at the nearest police station. Note: Stolen items' value will be depreciated based on date of purchase, limited to $500 per item. Damages on rented vehicles to be claimed separately from rental car insurance. Claim Category: Loss of Personal Property and Baggage Company: ACE My VoyageGuard Travel Insurance (now known as Chubb) Documents needed for the claim: Police report, Pictures, Flight Itineraries, Prices of items Claimed amount: ~$250 4. Lost possession Place of incidence: Seoul, South Korea Incident and response: We were at a skiing resort, changing in and out of the skiing gear when we realised we lost our wallet containing money and an apartment card of a friend staying in Korea. We made a police report, but the Korean police didn't seemed too concerned and filed a report nonetheless. Note: Items borrowed/rented in foreign land are not covered by insurance and are not claimable . Claim Category: Loss of Personal Property and Baggage Company: DirectAsia Travel Insurance Documents needed for the claim: Boarding passes, police report, Receipts of lost items* *Note that this particular insurance firm imposes a maximum claimable value of $50 for lost items without purchase receipts (who keeps them?!)
